South African champions target Melbourne Cup and Cox Plate
Up and coming South African colt, Jay Peg is likely to be aimed at the Cox Plate in Melbourne this spring carnival after charging to successive victories in the Group 1 $5.4 million Dubai Duty Free and $2.4 million Singapore Airlines International Cup. His stable mate and progressive stayer, Mourilyan could be a chance in the $5.5 million 2008 Melbourne Cup.Jay Peg, a Herman Brown trained four-year-old, toppled a star-studded field on Dubai World Cup night in March, storming to an impressive victory in the Group 1 Dubai Duty Free (1777-metres) as a $50 underdog. In May, he again defied his $17 pricing to dominate the Singapore Airlines International Cup (2000-metres) and score an emphatic win.
The rising star will now be tasked with challenging Australia's autumn racing hero Weekend Hussler for the $3 million Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on October 25.
Mourilyan, who only managed eighth in Singapore, found the distance too short and Brown feels the 3200-metre Melbourne Cup would be the perfect fit for the promising stayer's next major assignment. If all goes to plan, both horses will be quarantined and spelled at Sandown Racecourse before resuming training for their Melbourne Cup Spring Carnival missions.
