Weekend Hussler targets Cox Plate, Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup triple

The world's second highest rated three-year-old and Horse of the Year elect, Weekend Hussler could become only the second horse in history to accomplish Australian horse racing's ultimate feat – winning the Cox Plate, Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup Triple Crown in this year's Spring Carnival.

Despite the fact that he is untested beyond 1600-metres and that his trainer Ross McDonald is yet to confirm any plans for Weekend Hussler's Spring Carnival campaign; bookmakers are already tipping the gun galloper as favourite in the Cox Plate (2040-metres) and Caulfield Cup (2400-metres), as well as second favourite in the 2008 Melbourne Cup (3200-metres) – behind last year's Melbourne Cup winner Efficient.

Weekend Hussler displayed freakish dominance during the Autumn Racing Carnival to equal Kingston Town's record of six Group 1 wins in a season, claiming victory in the Caulfield Guineas, Ascot Vale Stakes, Oakleigh Plate, Newmarket Handicap, Randwick Guineas and George Ryder Stakes.

Expectations are that, as one of the most promising racing talents of the moment, Weekend Hussler will continue his remarkable form this spring. But should he start well with a win the Caulfield Cup, his Triple Crown potential could then lie in the hands of the Victorian Handicapper with the boom gelding having to face a potential insurmountable handicap in the Melbourne Cup.

Out of past champions, Rising Fast is the only horse to win the Cox Plate, Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup in the same year, a feat he accomplished in 1954. Might and Power claimed the Cup Double in 1997, winning the Cox Plate the following year, and Northerly won the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate in 2002.
